Unit Ten: Biography and Autobiography

Definitions

Point of View (Narration): The perspective from which a story is told and whether or not the narrator is part of the action.

First Person Narration: In first person narration, the narrator is part of the action and the story is told from their perspective.
First Person Words: I, me, my, mine, myself, we, us, our, ourselves, it
Example: I woke up this morning and realized that my alarm clock was never set. Mom had to drive me to school so I wouldn't be late.

Third Person Narration: In third person narration, the narrator is NOT part of the action and the story is told from the perspective of someone outside the story.
Third Person Words: he, his, him, himself, she, hers, her, herself, they, them, their, themselves
Example: He woke up this morning and realized that his alarm clock was never set. His mom had to drive him to school so he wouldn't be late.

Biography: A biography is an account of a person's life written by someone else.
Examples: books, textbooks, articles, websites

Autobiography: An autobiography is a self-written account of a person's own life.
Examples: diaries, journals, letters, memoirs, books
